Walking Hiking Wicklow

Our Hiking Programme

Walking Wicklow

The Wicklow mountains hiking season runs from early March through to October. Throughout the season Mountain Moor & Glen runs a pre-published programme of easy, moderate and strenuous grade hikes. These take place on the second and fourth Saturday of each month and are announced and outlined in our calendar. In addition we are always happy to arrange individual hikes, tailor-made to meet the specific ambitions, aspirations and wishes of individual small groups (3 to 10 persons) on dates of their choosing.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Our objective is simple, straightforward, and best summed up as follows:-
Provide our clients with an enjoyable and unforgettable wilderness experience in the Wicklow uplands.
We do this by arranging hikes which:-

  • as far as possible match group fitness and experience
  • provide an introduction to the topography of the Wicklow uplands and the natural and climatic influences which left us this unique and wonderful wilderness landscape
  • always make group and individual safety and well-being the most important priority

A TYPICAL HIKE
We will usually assemble at one of the main Upland population centres – Roundwood, Laragh/Glendalough or Glenmalure- where the leader and participants will introduce themselves. The leader will then outline the hike route, approximate distance and expected duration, give a terrain and weather briefing and carry out an equipment check.

We will then strike out on one or the many roadways that weave their way through the forested slopes of the lower valleys. As the route steadily ascends, the forest gives way to open moor-land, sometimes sheep-trailed, sometimes through knee-high heather, perhaps heading towards one of the many high peaks above Glendalough, Glenmalure or Glenmacnass. On the way the route may follow the bed of a crystal clear or boggy-brown mountain stream, perhaps with a stop for lunch (not provided) by a thundering waterfall or at one of the many small lakes nesting in the higher glens. A sharp eye trained on the middle distance will likely as not spot a herd or two of deer or if we’re lucky, the most spectacular Peregrine as it soars and dives at great speed among the high craggy cliffs. Chances are the long descent will finish with a well-earned pint at a cosy country pub to round off a day to remember.

EQUIPMENT AND SAFETY ESSENTIALS
It is the responsibility of every participant to arrive suitably equipped with the following essential items:

  • Sturdy well broken-in walking boots with good ankle support. Runners/trainers will not be allowed. Gaiters may also be useful.
  • Comfortable socks, removable layers of wind and water-proof breathable jacket and over-trousers, hat, gloves.
  • A rucksack (with plastic liner) to hold the above as well as a lunch pack, hot/cold drink, a whistle, personal items and if required, medication.
